In this article were going to explore the idea of intermittent fasting as an alternative to doing traditional exercise for weight loss. As we will see in this discussion, the two are not so different and can be a good way to speed up the effects of fat loss. Traditional Exercise
As opposed to exercise which requires physical exertion, intermittent fasting is simply a method of weight loss that requires you to abstain from eating for short periods of time. The duration of these fasts usually last around 24 hours and only need to be performed just once or twice a week.
A huge plus for using intermittent fasting as opposed to traditional exercise is the ability to lose weight without having to hit the gym. This can save you a bunch of time, especially if you lead a busy lifestyle and can’t spare the time it would take to workout.
It also means that with this method, diet becomes a major determinant in your weight loss progress. I usually say that diet and nutrition should be doing eighty to ninety percent of the work on your fat loss program. You should never rely on a workout routine exclusively for lasting fat loss. This is true because diet is a major controller of blood hormone levels and those hormones that affect weight loss are important if you want to lose fat.
Intermittent Fasting Compared To Exercise
In a traditional fat loss routine you would want to create a calorie deficit. It doesn’t matter how you create this deficit, all that matters is that it is created. You can do this by diet or exercise alone, or you can combine the two together. Preferably, using a combination of both is the best route. Since were comparing the two, we will stick with them separate.
When you exercise, blood hormone levels of insulin drop. You also see that the hormone human growth hormone (HGH), levels increase if you exercise intense. These conditions are needed in order for fat loss to occur.
It has been studied and shown to be true that by fasting for just 24 hours can create the same hormone blood levels that exercise does. So if you simply fasted once or twice a week for a period of approximately 24 hours, you could reproduce the affects that exercise does without having to workout at all.
